Avis has for some years now, been committed to the Government’s Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) drive, a well structured strategy to ensure that the previously skewed wealth and skills development of the country are corrected and for a certain period, ensure that a stronger flow and energy is put into improving the lives, skills and wealth of its previously disadvantaged population groups. The methodology adopted to achieve this momentous journey is spelled out in the SA Governments DTI web site.
Ownership is one of the seven B-BBEE rated categories which Avis improved significantly last year when it’s parent company – Barloworld South Africa (Pty) Ltd - took a major step forward with a structured and well planned share / equity allocation. The empowerment transaction which largely addressed it’s ownership scores for the various business units within the group and resulted in the Avis Rent a Car ownership rating catapulting from 4.7 to 21.8 out of 20 points in 2008. In the most recent rating, as at November 2009, Avis scored 21.33 out of 20 points while it’s black ownership increased year on year from 43.93% to 64.82%
In addition to Ownership, Avis has maintained a focus on the remaining six scorecard categories. While maximum points have been achieved in the past three ratings for Enterprise Development (15/15) and Social Economic Development (5/5), significant progress has been made in Preferential Procurement and Skills Development most recently scoring 18.23 out of 20 and 12.09 out of 15 respectively.
While we are very proud to have achieved the Level 2 contributor and Value Adding Enterprise status, this also brings significant benefits to our customers who are trying to improve their own B-BBEE scorecards. The new Avis rating means that our customers can now claim 156.25% of their spend with Avis when calculating their own Preferential Procurement spend.
More importantly though, our achievement installs a greater sense of pride in the staff and management of Avis, knowing that we work for a company which has taken a serious stand in regard to transformation and sharing in the wealth and development of this country with all it’s citizens.
